Winter Wellness Series
As the temperature drops during the winter months, and the snow approaches and with it comes “sick” season, we are all looking for ways to boost our health and wellness. Being active and remaining active although we do need to bundle up can be critical for your overall health and wellness.
The winter blues are normal, however in New England, including Connecticut, approximately 9% of people develop seasonal depression and the rate increases to 10-20% for individuals who already are suffering from depression and increases to 15-22% for individuals already suffering from bipolar disorder. National Institute of Mental Illness (NIMH) and the National Institute of Health (NIH).
Specifically, a study of college students in Northern New England found that 13.2% had winter seasonal affective disorder or depression and 19% had some symptoms of seasonal depression.
Sound Health and Wellness has hosted and is hosting events throughout the winter months to help you remain connected, engaged, and involved in your overall health and wellness goals.
February, we bring your creativity back as you engage in our Vision Board Workshop titled, “Love Your Vision” and welcome you to come in to create a vision board indicative of your goals, dreams and overall vision for the year ahead.
Finally, in March we have our Mindful March event in which we will be engaging in mindfulness meditation, and holistic Reiki activities to bring you back to the present moment and to learn to center yourself throughout your healing journey.

Winter Wellness Tips from Sound Health and Wellness to improve overall physical, and mental and emotional wellbeing during the winter months.
1. Bundle up and stay cozy!
The crisp winter air is upon us so remember to dress warm for this time of year. Invest in warm, waterproof clothing and layer up to stay cozy during your outdoor ventures, whether it's a walk through the park or a local winter festival.
2. Hydration Matters:
Remember to stay hydrated! . Enjoy hot beverages like herbal teas, warm water with lemon, or a comforting cup of hot cocoa to stay hydrated and maintain your overall health this winter.
3. Nutritious Comfort Foods:
Warm up from the inside with nutritious, comfort foods. Incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables into your diet, and indulge in nourishing soups and stews that provide both warmth and essential nutrients.
4. Winter Exercise Routine:
Don't let the cold weather keep you indoors! Hiking or walking outdoors can be great for the body and mind!! Also, you can engage in indoor fitness or simply take short brisk walks in your local park or neighborhood. Staying active and moving your body any way you can, boosts both physical and mental well-being.
5. Boost Your Immune System:
Support your immune system by eating these immune-boosting foods. Citrus fruits, ginger, garlic, and dark leafy greens are excellent choices to keep your health strong, and resilient during the winter months.
6. Prioritize Sleep:
The longer days of winter quality sleep and rest to rejuvenate your body. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, ensure your sleep space is comfortable and soothing for you, and aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to promote overall health and well-being.
7. Stay Connected with Community Events:
Combat winter blues by staying engaged in community events. Attend local gatherings, workshops, or crafting events during the winter months to keep yourself connected. Social connections contribute to mental health and add warmth to the winter season.
8. Mindful Winter Activities:
Engage in mindfulness activities to stay present and centered. Whether it's practicing meditation, practicing breathing exercises, or participating in a creative workshop, mindfulness can enhance your overall sense of well-being.
9. Winter Skincare:
Cold weather can be rough on your skin. Implement a winter skincare routine with hydrating lotions, lip balm, and moisturizers to keep your skin healthy and protected.
10. Embrace the Season!
Finally, don't forget to embrace and indulge in the simple joyous moments of the winter season. Keep yourself active and find moments of gratitude to enjoy the natural beauty of the winter season.
